Operating Theatre Reconfiguration and Extension - Boston West Hospital
Client
Ramsay Healthcare
Location
Boston
Duration
20 weeks
Value
£1.1m
Krypton Building Services was appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver a comprehensive reconfiguration and extension of the operational facilities at Boston West Hospital.
Project Profile
The live project, commissioned by Ramsay Healthcare, involves the internal reconfiguration of existing spaces to accommodate a new operating theatre, as well as a structural extension to house a new consultation room and bulk storage facility. The works are being carried out within a live hospital environment, requiring sensitive phasing and close coordination with hospital stakeholders to ensure clinical operations continued uninterrupted.
Our scope includes:
- Full internal strip-out and spatial reconfiguration to accommodate a new operating theatre
- Construction of a new single-storey extension to house a consultation room and bulk store
- Installation of new mechanical and electrical systems throughout all refurbished and extended areas
- Installation of new partition walls and suspended ceilings
- Application of new flooring and complete decorative finishes
- Creation of a new entrance doorway and external works associated with the extension
Challenge & Solution
Delivering construction works within a live hospital environment has bought unique challenges, particularly around infection control, patient safety, and access to clinical spaces. Krypton has implemented a delivery strategy, with mechanical and electrical validations completed before any intrusive works begin. High-risk or noisy activities have been scheduled outside peak clinical hours, and sensitive areas were protected with secure hoarding, dust suppression systems, and clearly marked exclusion zones. Close collaboration with hospital management has ensured the construction sequence could adapt in real-time to clinical priorities and operational demands.
Minimising disruption to essential healthcare services remains a top priority. Krypton is aligning each phase of works with hospital schedules to maintain progress while reducing operational impact. The site team holds routine briefings with Ramsay Healthcare’s clinical and facilities teams to ensure transparent communication and prompt identification of any potential conflicts. This collaborative approach is enabling the safe and efficient delivery of the works while maintaining the hospital’s full operational capacity. The project remains on programme and continues to progress to the required healthcare standards.
